Lensbabies?

Thu Jul 17, 2008, 10:06 AM
I've been hearing whispers about lensbabies and I know someone who uses one, but not well enough to ask.

It's been something I've thought of adding to my wish list, but I'm not very educated regarding them. I found a great website [link] but I've got to say it's sending me in circles as I can't decide how much work it will be to use one, whether the lens would be worth the money and effort and more so, which to go for? etc etc.

So I was wondering whether anyone here has anything to say, and if you do I'd love some feedback. :)

---

It's been pretty dark and boring over here in England, really hoping to get a few dry days with some less flat light so Rosanna, Sasha and I can give our ideas a go... but apart from a few from Sasha, concerning balloons (should be interesting :faint:), I'm out of them completely.

I've spent a lot of time today going through all the photography news articles, looking for inspiration. I've gotta say, there is a huge amount of beautiful work... I couldn't help but feature a few I love (if you think I should check something out - note me)!

Thank you much for the feature  You have a lovely gallery, and a beautiful feature collection. As far as Lensbabies go: I've never used one, but they're a little expensive for an effect that you wouldn't want to always use, and can pretty well be achieved with Photoshop anyway

:giggle: Yes, since I posted this I've discovered it probably would be a "toy" rather than something I can use for years and years.

Thank you for your comments on it nonetheless.

 You're more than welcome for the feature - I enjoyed your gallery.

I think you could do a really cool portrait series with jumping involved. Obviously a trampoline would be ideal, but I just think jumping shots are always fun!

:D Not a hard feat with my sisters having done a lot of trampolining. Great idea, thanks, Alex!

You should find these helpful:

and others on the website I think.

General concensus is that they create unique effects which are hard to replicate in photoshop but they do require a little practice and certainly cannot be used "on the fly"

I think for what you do it would offer exciting creative options at a lowish cost (and I am assuming you cant afford a 50 1.2L or 85 1.2L :P)

:giggle: Actually, I haven't heard of the two you mentioned. I googled both out of interest and they seem really interesting. Kinder on the eye also compared to a lensbaby (but I suppose it depends on how you take it/the settings etc). What I don't know is, what's the difference between say the 85 1.2L and what I've got? If it was something to work towards, would it be worth it? I'm lucky to have a collection of lenses I can use... I've got a 100mm 85mm 50mm 24-70mm 16-35mm 135mm ...I don't know enough to know whether it would be worth getting a lensbaby, or something more expensive but which may be more useful.

While i dont photograph much myself (holidays and bored moments with my phone being the limit really) but my friend goes on alot of photography websites and he said that quite a few have forums where you can ask questions and people are really helpful and supportive

As for photo ideas i agree about water in motion, always good, and woodlands never cease to provide good pictures whether on purpose or by accident and i wouldnt mind seeing a few more like the jeans since theyre the ones that first introduced me to your gallery (and im very glad about that ^^)

I've joined a forum, but I'm a bit hesitant.. always one to not be pushed down, or get too much criticism before I'm ready. Not to say I don't ask for it, but I ask in small amounts and then in crease that.

I'd just love to be able to get around more. Need to take my driving test! Walking and riding a bike is all fine, but around here there are hills everywhere, no problem - but with a camera + a few lens and a tripod (especially for landscape) = nightmare. :faint:

Jeans were just really a one-off go and as you may see, I took them down as I wanted to keep my gallery family-friendly, if you know what I mean. But who knows what I'll do in the future! :D
